so as you may/[not] have heard/read/[egotism(etc)] i'm doing party promotions now
which does NOT mean that i am turning my back on the fashion world
fashion is still my one true love but i have a big heart so there is more then enough room for drinking and dancing
actually the two pair rather well together as the night is an excellent time to try out some more outrageous outifts. like the vintage sequined dress i wore last nite. pics to follow.
i would never have even thought about doing this sort of thing if it hadn't been for big j who is really one of the best djs in town. this guy is where it's at. and for as good of a dj as he is, he's even better friend. so when he asked me if i would like to help him out i could hardly say no and it's turned out to be a lot of fun.
so we've got this space. and it's incredible, really. you've just got to check it out. it's soo so new york. it's in the basement of suite. don't get ahead of yourself on this one, ok? the thing is you've probably either been there once and hated it or you've heard all about it and avoided it. forget what you think you know. because you're thinking of the "main" floor. we have nothing to do with whats going on upstairs. and i don't blame you. i would party up there either. its just not my scene. and if you're reading this im guessing it's not yours either. very standard issue, top 40, "baby can i buy you a drink?", etc. but downstairs, thats whats happening. srsly. week after week, big j and i are bringing the party and it just keeps getting better.
heres the deal: you RSVP to suite.basement@gmail.com if you keep showin up eventually you won't even have to worry about that because we have a VIP list of regulars who get to skip the line. the vip list includes very cool kids like taylor phillips, robbie call, clara leonard, dustin hollywood, jason faries, cassidy keeland, molly mollotova, tony schwa, taylor ghrist, mattiee stafford, jordan traxler, stephanie kimberly and various others whom i consider myself fortunate enough to call friend. once your RSVP has been confirmed you walk around to the side entrance of suite [4515 travis st] LOOKING SHARP- we are serious about the dress code. upstairs it's no shorts, no tshirts, no flip flops. downstairs its no boring. we want to see creativity, originality, flair and above all STYLE. that said, no flip flops please. it's a liability. besides, we're trying to keep it classy- there will be a door man. he will check you off the list. you go inside. another door man will unlock the door to the basement for you and let you downstairs. then you dance like a nympho on speed.

ok so multiple things i like about:
i'm rather bottom heavy in case you haven't noticed [how could you not? i'm not delusional. i know what i look like. i make it work.] so all the focus up top is very good for me

So here's the thing, I genuinely belive that people who have mastered the art of layering represent an elevated level of fashionista because it indicates that
A] you have put a great deal of time and effort into the physical application of clothing and are therefor truly devoted
B] you're a natural. congratulations
c] CHOOSE.YOUR.OWN.RESPONSE. [lol]
as you can see by the picture, the picture, i'm really more of a grasshopper then a master. i still put myself rather firmly in category "B" though because in my native south, as a result of the mild climate, we simply don't value these subleties. i mean girls here where uggs with mini skirts in the summer and flip flops with sweatpants in the winter. we are simply confused about seasonal appropriacy. we need help.
as i am myself currently in the proccess of advancing my personal brand [oh, the lols] i'll share with you a few easy tips:
1st keep your colour palette simple.
i have crippling complicated ideas about colour [likely stemming from my art background] so i tend to stick to black but whatever looks best on you + a neutral + no, stop there, what part of simple don't you understand?
2nd ACCESSORIES this is the ameteurs version of layering and something that- if i do say so myself- i am so good at, every morning i have to take something off before i leave the house to tone it down a notch. so obv i tend to over do it, shame on me but really a lil bling is the difference between you and the unwashed masses
3rd be very careful when "playing with textures"! women's magazines in a misguided attempt to encourage you to experiement often use this phrase but while double faced washed silk satin + cotton taffeta [a la SARTEL] = yes, yes & then again yes! velvet + satin almost always = Oh, honey, no! so as a rule of thumb, consider the weight of the fabric textures you're contrasting. otherwise you'll end up looking like you're playing dress up and not in a good way

so last nite was the SMU Retail Club Fashion show, Jordie styled the whole thing and he did a terrific job- and i'm not just saying that because he sat me in the front row with a swag bag from Barneys//pumped me full of pink lemonade and cupcakes//ties that Lanvin scarf like a pro//is my bestie. let's take a look, shall we?

-Christian Siriano got picked up by SAKS 5th Avenue!!! I AM SO PROUD OF HIM! It is just so inspiring to see young designers thriving. It's a tough business and a tough time to be in but if you just hustle smaller labels are really in a unique postion to take advantage of the current market climate. We don't have huge staffs to pay or expensive shows to put on so we can really focus on quality of construction. And retailers love that they can put in smaller orders so it's low risk for all involved parties. I don't know why people are so surprised though, Christian was always dead fucking serious. People used to hate on him because he talks so much shit but the kid can back it up. He is truly an artist and the clothes reflect it.

I'll try to take a better picture soon but I really have work to do right now.

Actually, I don't love this look. All the Juicy/Coach accessories come off sort of mall ratty, like something Hilary Duff would have worn back when Disney still owned her soul for a night a on the town... it's very "Girl Next Door Takes On The Big City" right?
But it is flattering, I swear I look 15 lbs lighter. That dress is genius and it doesn't take a genius to see why- the trim on the dress is like someone took a highligher to all of your prettiest, skinniest parts. To which I can only say THANK YOU! Also when in doubt: knee length dress/skirt+v neck+ heels= looks good on everyone! Even if you're not a dress person this is the kind of dress every girl should have, you could just as easily wear it on a date as to a job interview.

so you know how I said you should always bring a change of shoes just in case? well it's a good thing I follow my own advice because I ended up going out [sort of] after all- to the Daily Candy Ruffian Book Signing Benefiting the Dallas Contemporary at Samuel Lynne Galleries. My spirits [allergies+poverty=downer] and camera battery were both pretty low so I didn't take a lot of pictures or do a lot of gossiping [did meet the PR Reps for Valentino & Carolina Hererra though, both of whom said rose-gold for fall, just a heads up]. I have to add something to the extra shoe rule though- it's probably not a bad idea to keep a clutch handy because David Ninh totally snapped me and I was carrying a hot pink wristlet I have a feeling it looked very "please pay attention to me", like a little black dress with candy red patent leather heels [so over it, very 2k6]. Hopefully he'll send me the picture so that we can talk about why I should have just left it in the car. Coco Chanel [ok I have to bird walk for a second- you're not going to believe this but my roomate saw me reading "Chanel:A Woman of Her Own" and said "Chanel was a person?!?!" UNbelievable.] once said "If you remember the dress, if was ugly dress. If you remember the woman, it was a beautiful dress." Thats probably what happened with the bag.

The girl above left is a friend of Brian Wolk & Claude Morais [that's him checking out her ass btw], Mary Nelson Sinclair [TX NATIVE!] Naturally, she is head to toe in Ruffian. The clothes are gorgeous and so is she but I have to say my favorite parts are the spotted tights which are actually- suprise!- a body suit [look closely around the collar or just look here: RUFIAN FALL 09 ] which I think is very naughty in a French cliches done right/YSL homage sort of way and the shoes which are of course Christian Louboutin for Ruffian. If I had to guess I'd say they were a good 6 inches which, all politics aside, is very now. [WITHERING HEIGHTS ] Someone [Marc Jacobs?] said something recently that was actually about Katie Grand but makes a very good point a about Louboutin "Having her do your styling is like have Louboutin do your shoes, it shows you mean business" Louboutins are the gold standard!

People who have to spend a lot of time with me are probably pretty damn sick of these particulary pieces of my wardrobe because I wear them all the fucking time. I can't help it they are so handy dandy wearable! In the words of Lanvin's genius, Alber Elbaz "If it's not edible, it's not food. If it's not wearable, it's not fashion." [Loves me some Alber! Us fashion fatties gots to stick together (omg appalling grammar, even I hate me right now) like maybe he, Andre Leon Tally, Harriet Mays Powell and I should start a club. We would probably let Beth Ditto and Adele be honorary members.]
In the winter I was really heavily accessorizing this look- black leather Coach riding boots w/ gold buckles, white quilted leather vintage handbag w/ gold chain handbag, white cashmere Coach scarf, gold Juicy Couture charm bracelet maybe even gold+pearl Juicy Coture hoop earrings and black tights. It's hot but it's a whole lot of look and since it's going to be hot outside today, I decided to tone it down a notch. Glad I did too because I think I look pretty San Diego [classy].
Let's talk about the individual items for a bit because what I sort of hate about most street fashion blogs is that when you look at what someone is wearing you aren't really sure why the look "works".
So the jacket is probably the best thing I ever rescued from a GoodWill. I almost didn't buy it because it's huge [size 14!] so I'll never be able to wear it as an actual blazer but that's sort "done" anyway, don't you think? I highly reccomend investing in a jacket. You think you won't wear it but you will, trust me. Look at my pal Jordie for instance [below] the boy is practically always wearing a jacket [you should see his hall closet, he could start a small specialty store] and he always looks FIERCE! Jackets, people- very recession friendly.

The DRESS was a gift from an old friend who is the best gift giver everr. Why? Because she takes me shopping. GENIUS! Back in high school she got me this canvas Andy Warhol tote bag- I hate to be one of "those" girls but I swear to all that is fashionable I had it before anyonelse- and I still carry it all the fucking time. Love that thing! Ok but back to the dress, I realize not everyone is allergic to pants like Lady Gaga and I are but you really ought to be wearing more dresses.

3 REASONS WHY GIRLS SHOULD WEAR DRESSES
1] all day long people will ask you "what are you so dressed up for?" and excaim that "don't you look nice!" even if you wear the dress with flats and a ponytail
2] think about this, it will blow you mind, you only have to put on one item of clothing. no coordinating sepearates, no wondering if things match, no searching for something clean- just pull it straight over your head and head out the door.
3] despite the relatively recent revival of the man tunic, dresses are still the only thing that are uniquely female. so be proud of your vagina, wear a dress!
This particular dress is a great day to night piece because it has a little bit of metallic in the print, so I would probably just change shoes and lose the jacket to go out.
that's another very important styling trick: always BRING A CHANGE OF SHOES. always.

The necklace deserves some attention too. Some of the best styling advice I've gotten lately was from Justin Tranter, who you probably already know I'm fascinated by. Anyway Justin actually has a jewelry line [FETTY] so he knows what he's saying when it comes to accessories and here's what he says- VAMP! -if you were too lazy to watch the video, I'll sum it up for you. If you're broke but still fabulous don't leave the house without high heels, makeup and jewelery [something about hair + friends too, watch the video. another very important styling trick- study the greats, what makes them so great? watch & learn] because these things allow you to wear thrift store finds without looking like a total altbag.
My necklace, as mentioned is M. Graves by Megan Marrin. Megan is this completely gifted New York based artist [Megan Marrin] her aesthetic is sort of nostalgic and spooky.

The above work is composed of a black and white painting spliced with a vintage photograph that I'm guessing she picked up at a flea market. It's my favorite of hers. The idea of found art objects really informs her jewelry line [available exclusively @ SARTEL), Opening Ceremony, the bell jar & MGraves] which is composed primarily of porcelain doll heads salvaged from a factory that was shelled out during WWII.

Groovy, right? Loves it.

So Friday I was supposed to go the West Rocks party at Beauty Bar to see Semi Precious Weapons only when I called to RSVP nobody told me they were fucking checking i.d.s [xs to sxsw "I don't want to drink I just want to party!"]. The good news is I was there to see, not to be seen and I could see just fine through the fence. That said I was probably looking pretty decent for a festival bum in my overized black Weezer concert tshirt, cuffed & faded vintage denim shorts and borrowed black patent leather gladiator sandals. Cole took a fan picture, maybe he will send it to me so I can post it. They played twice more in Austin and I probably could have snuck in but I'll be honest, I didn't really try because Shaun txtd me and said the boys were playing @ Sue Ellens Sunday night! Which brings us back to the picture.
I'm not a lesbian but I really like Sue Ellen's. It's so chill there. No one ever asks me for my i.d. or my money. Also I met up with a bunch of other girls from the video [pictured] so it was really sort of like a nice homecoming after all that travel. Dan came up and chatted with us. He was wearing a pair of the Sierra Mist swag sunglasses they were passing out at the convention center only he had poked the lenses out for a sort of Buddy Holly look. Loves it. Also he had picked up a thrift store blazer, cropped it and used the lining to make a pocket square. Well, not quite but he's working on it. I really love men's fashion. Because you don't see a lot of it. I mean most of the straight guys I know are basically bros so they're just bumming around in AmAp deep V's, Chucks and Levi's. If we're lucky, they shave. So on that note Stevy does this thing where he cuts out the collar and button placket of mens shirt and wears it with a tshirt and blazer that I could really see being the next big thing in diy alt accessories.

yeah, I'm in that crowd. Front row. Dancing, like an idiot. I can't help myself, I love them! and I'll be honest with you I had never heard of them before the video [in fact I believe the very 1st thing I ever said to Justin was, "I don't know who you are but you make Jeffery Star look like Richard Simmons] but they are just so soo relevant. Look at the runways! Look at Balmain and Nina Ricci, this is what people want right now- sex and glitter. It's no wonder Kate Moss is pretty much they're biggest fan [KMoss<3SPW]! How often do you see a band where every single member is gorgeous+stylish? They happen to be intelligent, articulate and talented as well so I highly reccomend seeing them live. And dance when you get there.

My long term goal is that the blog gets picked up by a more legitimate website or publication. If I was given the opportunity to pitch it to FD!Luxe, I'd probably call it FD!Rox and work like a local youth street fashion angle- like the Sartorialist+ commentary.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves. I believe strongly in listening to the universe and lately, I feel like the universe has been telling me to blog.
